چکیده

Classification schemes, such as the DMoZ web directory, provide a convenient and intuitive way for humans to access classified contents. While being easy to be dealt with for humans, classification schemes remain hard to be reasoned about by automated software agents. Among other things, this hardness is conditioned by the ambiguous nature of the natural language used to describe classification categories. In this paper we describe how classification schemes can be converted into OWL ontologies, thus enabling reasoning on them by Semantic Web applications. The proposed solution is based on a two phase approach in which category names are first encoded in a concept language and then, together with the structure of the classification scheme, are converted into an OWL ontology. We demonstrate the practical applicability of our approach by showing how the results of reasoning on these OWL ontologies can help improve the organization and use of web directories.

A Survey of Identifiers and Labels in OWL Ontologies

We present a survey of the usage and style of identifiers and labels of named entities in a corpus of OWL ontologies. We investigated the frequency of use of both labels and meaningful or meaningless identifiers in those ontologies. We also surveyed common practices of lexical encoding styles for identifiers. We found that most ontologies do not use labels for named entities. When they do use l...

The OBO to OWL Mapping, GO to OWL 1.1!

A large library of biomedical ontologies has been developed in the OBO format, including important ontologies such as the Gene Ontology (GO). These resources have the potential to contribute to the Semantic Web in the life sciences domain. In particular, they allow the annotation of distributed experimental data in using a controlled and shared vocabulary. As the Web Ontology Language OWL is th...

Integrating Hierarchical Controlled Vocabularies With OWL Ontology: A Case Study from the Domain of Molecular Interactions

Many efforts at standardising terminologies within the biological domain have resulted in the construction of hierarchical controlled vocabularies that capture domain knowledge. Vocabularies, such as the PSI-MI vocabulary, capture both deep and extensive domain knowledge, in the OBO (Open Biomedical Ontologies) format. However hierarchical vocabularies, such as PSI-MI which are represented in O...

Getting the Best from Two Worlds: Converting Between OBO and OWL Formats

OWL is one of the most popular ontology languages, mostly due to its expressiveness as well as its formal semantics. Yet, in the biomedical domain, OBO, a language that was expressly developed for the construction of bioontologies, is the format preferred by the community for this purpose. This is best exemplified by the fact that OBO-based ontologies are driving the model organism databases th...

Owlifier: Creating OWL-DL ontologies from simple spreadsheet-based knowledge descriptions

Discovery and integration of data is important in many ecological studies, especially those that concern broad-scale ecological questions. Data discovery and integration is often a difficult and time-consuming task for researchers, which is due in part to the use of informal, ambiguous, and sometimes inconsistent terms for describing data content. Ontologies offer a solution to this problem by ...
